Power of Attorney for Young Adult Children

July 26, 2015

Problem: Many parents’ estate plans lack a Durable Power of Attorney or Patient Advocate Designation for their young adult children.

Spring break and the travel season are here.  If some unfortunate event happens to your young adult child while traveling are you prepared to act on their behalf to meet their legal or medical needs?  A General Durable Power of Attorney and Power of Attorney for Health Care (also known as Patient Advocate Designation or Advance Medical Directive) can provide great assistance and peace of mind.

A General Durable Power of Attorney can be useful if your young adult child is incapacitated or traveling during a period of time when they might need an agent to sign a document or handle their affairs while away.  This legal instrument is designed to give the agent as much authority as possible and take effect when signed, or alternatively, only come into effect only upon the disability of the person who signed it.  A Power of Attorney for Health Care is a form of advance medical directive.  It empowers another person to make medical decisions for your young adult child if they are unable to do so for themselves.  With this document they can give the broadest possible powers to their agent for decisions on medical treatment, up to and including life support treatment.

Solution: We routinely prepare these legal instruments for our clients at a flat fee.  Once prepared and properly signed, we store a secure electronic copy for you that can be emailed from our office in an emergency situation.  If interested, contact us at: info@lasusalaw.com
